Lefkada, an Ideal Destination

Lefkada the "Emerald Isle" is a beautiful island in the Ionian Sea, located between Corfu and Kefalonia.

It is the fourth largest island in the Ionian Islands with an area of 302 sq km and 23,000 inhabitants.

The island is near the coast of Akarnania in western Greece. Many historians, like Thucydides and Strabo mention Lefkada in their writings as a peninsula. The distance between them is 50 meters and they are connected by a floating bridge.

It is a beautiful and mountainous island, also covered with dense vegetation on the east and south sides. The eastern coast gently slopes down to the sea. The western coast faces the beautiful Mediterranean and is steep, with stretches of beautiful sandy beaches. Included in the Lefkada prefecture are Lefkada, as well as the smaller, heavily wooded islands of Meganisi, Kalamos, Kastos, Madouri, Skorpios, and Sparti.

The island got its name from the white cliffs located at the southernmost tip of the island, the “Lefkata

This capital city of the island is a peaceful, serene, and beautiful town built on a natural harbor. It features unique, multicolored wooden houses, whose upper floors are covered with sheet metal.

The island's climate is mediterranean. This can be distinguished from the bright sunshine and seldom cloudiness during the summer, while winters have frequent rains, but rarely frost or snow. Summer is hot, and prevailing winds make the atmosphere pleasant. The island has a large numbers of tourists each year thanks to these unique climatic characteristics.

Historically, the island has only been inhabited since the 6th century BC. It has a wonderfully relaxed and romantic atmosphere. Legend has it that Sappho, after being jilted by her lover, climbed the high cliffs of Cape Lefkada and threw herself into the sea to escape her unrequited love by death. Sappho’s Leap, as it is called today, is now a very popular place for hang gliders.

Also according to Lefkada history, in the 8th century AD, Saint Mayra, who was a black saint famous for her stunning beauty and her purity, sought sanctuary on the White Island, in order to escape her unwanted suitor. Here she lived until her death in a solitary state. After her death, her sainthood was assured, when it was discovered that her tomb could cure sickness and ward off evil spirits.

The specificity of accessing Lefkada is that it is the only Greek island that can be accessed by a floating bridge road.

From Athens Lefkada is about 370 km via big roads, 400km from Thessaloniki, through the Via Egnatia and 100 km from the port of Igoumenitsa through the underwater tunnel of Preveza.

Also, two of Lefkada's villages, Nidri and Vasiliki, are linked by ferry boat with the islands of Cephalonia and Ithaca.

If you arrive by plane, the international airport of Action is at a distance of 18km form the town of Lefkada.
